Questions and Product Samples

Important- Be sure you take time to read all information provided on the product page when you order and also view the all important stone placement chart for your particular item. It is important that you do not rush through the order process because these items are custom made to your specifications and are not cancelable once in production.

PRICING: How do I find my price on custom made mother's jewelry?

Pricing is included in the option boxes for the product you are considering. Simply make the required selections on the product page and click the "ORDER" button if you would like the shopping cart to calculate the total for you.  Simulated stone rings are priced based on the karat gold selected and the number of stones required. Genuine stone rings are based on these things too but also depend upon which genuine stones you select. Each genuine stone is priced separately and is added to the base price. Sales tax is collected for all orders shipping to the state of Michigan.

Will my ring look just like the one in the picture?

Each piece of mother's ring is custom made to represent the individual uniqueness of your special family.  Each birth month is represented by either a genuine or simulated stone.  If you select the ring with simulated stones, with the same number of stones and the same months, in around a ring size 6 1/2 then, yes, it will look like the one in the picture. Otherwise, no.  Most rings are pictured are samples with simulated stones (unless otherwise indicated) and rings do look different depending upon the number of stones and the birth months ordered.  Most are shown in approximate finger size 6 1/2 and all items are enlarged to show detail.  Be sure to view the stone placement diagram for the item you are considering to see how the stones are arranged.  Refer to millimeter sizes provided.  If you are in doubt as to whether you will like a particular style, we offer brass samples for viewing prior to purchase... see below for details.

STONE ARRANGEMENT: How should stones be arranged in a Mother's Ring®?

It is entirely up you on how stones are arranged in a Mother's Ring®.  Most people arrange stones based on color... in other words, stones are arranged for the best visual appearance. Others like to arrange stones from oldest to youngest. Some insist on keeping twins/triplets/etc. side-by-side.  A Mother's Ring® can also include mom and dad's birthstones if you would like to ring to represent your entire family.  Some people have mom and dad's stones in the middle of the ring with the children's stones surrounding them. Others choose to have the children's stones in the middle with mom and dad on either end as if protecting the family. These are symbolic rings so it is what you want your special ring to represent.

RING SIZE: I'm not sure which ring size to order...

It is usually best to have your finger sized by a professional jeweler especially if a ring with a wide ring shank is being considered (it covers more of the finger and tends to fit a bit tighter). Any ring returned for resizing that is the size ordered will be charged for resizing and shipping. We do offer a set of plastic sizers in full and half sizes from size 4 though 13 which (each plastic ring represents one size).  Our price is $3.50 and this includes shipping via standard US Mail.  See below to order...

Important: It is always best to order a mothers ring is the correct ring size in the first place!  Mfrs. will not warrant an item that has been worked on by anyone other than themselves. Resizing can also be expensive especially in the case of The Original Mother's Ring® which has two bands... both bands must be resized and also re-soldered if it was ordered as a "pinch back" and shipping fees apply (see product information page for The Original Mother's Ring for important information for fit).  We recommend that you order finger sizers if you do not know the ring size required.

SAMPLES: I don't know which style I like best... do you have samples?

If you are not sure you will like a particular custom made item, we strongly recommend that you view a brass sample before you purchase because special order and custom made items are not returnable.  We have gold-plated brass samples available for many, but not all, of our custom mother's products.  These are not for sale but may be ordered for viewing only and must be returned within 10 days of shipment.

Can I get an Alexandrite, Cultured Pearl or Opal in a Mother's Ring®?

Unfortunately, these stones are not offered in Mother's Rings®.  Please see below...

Alexandrite: Because of the price and often limited availability of genuine Alexandrite, this mfr. uses Green Tourmaline to represent the green color of Alexandrite. (Alexandrite is a color-change stone.)  Green Tourmaline however is more of a medium to medium-dark olive green color.

Opals or Cultured Pearls: Opals are cabochon-shape stones... they are domed with no facets so when set they look different when compared to a faceted stone when viewed from the top and the side. The same applies to Cultured Pearls although they are not a cabochon-shape stone.  The prongs of the these Mother's Ring® settings are not long enough to securely hold opals or cultured pearls in place.

What are the traditional birthstones for each month & what stones are offered in Mother's Rings®?

Mother's Rings® are offered with many of the traditional stones with the exception of the stone for the month of June.  Other non-traditional stones are also offered as an alternative to keep pricing more affordable.

  Common Gemstone Enhancements & Treatments

Enhancement: Any treatment process other than cutting and polishing that improves the appearance (color/clarity/phenomena), durability, or availability of a gemstone.

Some gemstones come from the earth with a color that is simply made beautiful by the cutting and polishing process. Many others are enhanced with various processes or treatments to improve or produce their beautiful color and/or clarity.  For example, "blue" topaz is colorless or near colorless until it has been irradiated.  Almost all tanzanite is produced by heating brown zoisite. Below are some of the common gemstone enhancement and treatment processes for colored stones...

Aquamarine- Heating: The use of heat to effect the desired alteration of color, clarity, and/or phenomena. Amethyst- This gemstone is routinely enhanced.

Blue Zircon- Heating: The use of heat to effect the desired alteration of color, clarity, and/or phenomena.

Citrine- Heating: The use of heat to effect the desired alteration of color, clarity, and/or phenomena. Residue of foreign substances in open fractures is not visible under properly illuminated 10x magnification.
Diamonds- Not currently known to be enhanced. Emerald- This gemstone is routinely enhanced. Frequently oiled to fill voids and faults in emeralds to improve the overall appearance but not limited to this process.
Garnet- Not currently known to be enhanced. Iolite-  Not currently known to be enhanced.
Peridot- Not currently known to be enhanced. Ruby- Heating: The use of heat to effect the desired alteration of color, clarity, and/or phenomena. Frequently heat treated to remove purple and brown overtones and to improve clarity.
Sapphire- Heating: The use of heat to effect the desired alteration of color, clarity, and/or phenomena. Tourmaline- This stone is routinely enhanced.

If I order 10k or 14k white gold, is it just yellow gold that has been plated to look white?

Absolutely not!  When you select the white karat gold option, the item will be 10k or 14k white gold all the way through.

Can I order both genuine AND simulated stones in the same ring?

YES!  Mother's Rings® can be made with both genuine and simulated stones.  To order, use the GENUINE stone order form. When you reach the stone position that you would like to be simulated, DO NOT make a selection.  Complete the order.  When you reach the billing information page there is a space for comments. In that box you must type the following-

ORDERING STONE POSITION # (ENTER STONE POSITION NUMBER) WITH A SIMULATED (ENTER MONTH) STONE.

Your ring will then be made with both genuine and simulated stones.

What is the difference between genuine, synthetic and simulated stones?

Genuine Stones: Genuine stones come from the earth and have been created by God/Nature.  Many genuine stones are commonly treated by man to either bring about or enhance their beauty.  Some stones are rather unattractive until they have been treated.
Synthetic Stones:
Synthetic stones are man-made or created stones that have approximately the same chemical and physical characteristics of genuine stones.  They are created in a laboratory by man.
Simulated Stones:
These are stones that only look similar to a genuine stone... they imitate a genuine stone.  Note that simulated stones do not look the same as genuine stones.

What happens if we have a new addition to our family and we would like to add stones in the future?

All Mother's Rings® can have stones "added" at a later date for an additional charge plus shipping as long as the design is still available when this service is required.  Contact us for current pricing for this service- include style number, whether genuine or simulated stones are set, the number of stones in the ring you currently have and the new stone addition(s) required. Your existing ring is usually often traded in for a new one with the new stone additions... you do NOT get your old ring back. The one exception is the Original Mother's Ring®... this ring usually has new heads soldered in place for the new stone additions (note that existing stones must usually be removed and reset except for diamonds, rubies or sapphires because they will not take the heat.  See each product page for the maximum number of stones possible for that particular style.

Note that the Original Mother's Ring® is more expensive to add new stones... this is one ring where the original setting is usually returned with new stones added.  If the current stones are not ruby, sapphire or diamond, they must be removed to have a new head soldered on the existing ring (any other stone will be damaged by the heat) and then the stones must be reset along with the new stone addition(s).  See the product information page for The Original Mother's ring for important details before ordering.

Why are mother's jewelry products "not returnable"?

Each mother's jewelry item is custom made just for you.  When you order a ring from us, we do not take a ring that someone else returned and resize it/reset stones.  Each ring is new from the manufacturer.  Our chances of ever selling a returned piece with the same gold quality, color of gold, ring size, type of stones, kind of stones, and placement of stones is nearly impossible.  So in order for us to offer lower prices, we do not accept returns. See below for information about if we make a mistake. NOTE: Product samples are available for many of our products... see a sample before you purchase if you are unsure.

Can I cancel my order after it has been placed?

In most cases the answer is no.  If your order has not yet been placed with the manufacturer, we will be happy to cancel the order for you.  If, however, the item has gone into production, we cannot cancel the order.  Many items are put into production very shortly after you place your order so order very carefully.

But what if there is something wrong with the custom item I ordered?

Items are guaranteed to be free of manufacturer defects and as ordered.

Product Guarantee- All items are guaranteed to be delivered free of manufacturer's defects.  If any item has a manufacturer's defect as determined by the manufacturer, it will be corrected by the mfr. at no charge to you.  We will even pay for your return shipping if it is determined to be a manufacturer's defect. Loss of stones, broken prongs or any other damage caused by accident or abuse is not covered.  Click here for product care and stone loss and prong breakage note. Note that mfr. warranties are voided if someone other that the manufacturer works on the item.

Manufacturer Defects or OUR Mistakes: If there is a manufacturer's defect or if we make a mistake and send the wrong size, stones, color of gold, spelling or stone placement we will, of course, have the manufacturer take care of the problem.  We have been in business for over 29 years and stand behind our products. We inspect each item prior to shipment and we do our best to catch any mfr. errors or defects before we ship.  If there is a mistake or problem on our part, you must telephone us within 15 days of delivery.  If it is our mistake, we will resize the ring, reset stones, have items remade if a misspelling is our mistake or make any other corrections for free and will also reimburse you for the return US Priority Mail insured shipping fee.  Note that we do not reimburse fees for work done by someone else.  Corrections because of our error (stone placement, names, etc.) will not be free of charge after the above stated time period so inspect the item immediately upon delivery.

Customer Mistakes: Any ring returned for sizing that is the correct size ordered, for rearrangement or change in stones or for any other alteration or correction that was shipped as you ordered it, will be charged accordingly and standard shipping fees will apply. We strongly encourage you to verify your order after you have placed the item in the shopping cart to make sure you have not made any mistakes.

When will my order arrive?

This generally depends upon two factors... the color of gold ordered and the shipping method selected or required.

Production Time:  All Mother's Rings® take about 7 to 14 days to craft and ship.  Add an additional 5 days if 14k white gold is requested (or platinum or platinum/18k gold Original Mother's Ring®).  You must also include time for delivery service of approximately 2 business days.

Delivery Time- Time in the Shipping Company's Hands: Most items in this store ship to our USA customers free via insured FedEx 2nd Day Delivery.  EXCEPTIONS are for orders shipping to Post Office box numbers, our military customers with APO and FPO addresses and some orders shipping to addresses other than the billing address.  If you prefer insured US Priority Mail delivery service,  you must indicate this on the order form in the comments box located on the billing page. Note that insured US Priority Mail is an approximate 3-5 day delivery service to addresses in the USA but is not guaranteed to arrive in that time frame.  A signature is required for all deliveries.

How should I properly care for my new piece of jewelry?

If you treat your new jewelry with extra care, it will give you years of enjoyment. It is not meant to be worn when doing any work where you might hit it and cause damage.  It is important that during everyday wear if you should hit your hand/ring/jewelry on something, that the prongs and stones be carefully inspected immediately for any damage.  You do not have to be doing heavy work to damage a piece of jewelry... simply hitting a ring accidentally on the edge of a table/counter/file cabinet/etc. or hooking a prong on something can break off prongs or chip or shatter stones. It is common to cause damage and not even remember when you did it because we constantly use our hands. As with all jewelry, but especially rings, over time the prongs will wear down and will require retipping (when a piece requires retipping will depend upon how often it is worn) so it is important to have your new jewelry inspected periodically by a professional jeweler. We recommend inspection at least every 3-12 months depending upon how often the item is worn. Generally, opals require a bit more care because they are a softer stone... to prevent cracking, do not subject opals to rough handling or sudden temperature changes.  Use a jewelry cleaner periodically that is made specifically for the type of metal and the kind of stones set in the piece or have the item cleaned by a professional jeweler. Remove your jewelry before using any harsh cleaners or products.

Stone Loss & Prong Breakage Note: Prongs generally do not just fall off and stones usually don't just fall out. In other words, it usually takes some action on the part of the person wearing the jewelry to cause this damage.  Items are carefully inspected prior to shipment.  The usual reason for loss or damage is hitting or snagging a prong on something which causes the prong to break off or be pulled away from the stone or the stone itself is hit and broken or shattered. (Also see below for karat gold's reaction to chlorine/bleach.) This damage is not a manufacturer's defect and standard repair and shipping charges apply.  One manufacturer's defect that can cause prongs to simply fall off shortly after purchase is porosity caused during the manufacturing process... the setting is returned to the mfr. for testing to determine this is the cause. When porosity during the manufacturing process is the cause, the ring is scrapped and a new ring made at no charge.  This has happened to our products only twice over the past 10 years.

Important Notice About Gold Jewelry & Chlorine:

Chlorine and products that contain chlorine are one of your gold jewelry’s worst enemies. Over time it will weaken the gold structure resulting in broken prongs, links, etc. When enjoying swimming pools or hot tubs or simply using cleaning products that contain chlorine or bleach, remember to remove your jewelry and store it in a safe place.

When will my credit card be charged?

The charge is applied to your credit card before we proceed with your order.  We cannot request an item be crafted by our mfrs. unless the order has been paid in full.  If you choose to pay by check, your order and payment must be mailed to our store address... when it arrives, your order will be placed with the mfr.  If credit card billing information provided does not match what your bank has on file, your order will be delayed or voided.

Will I receive a certificate of authenticity?

A copy of your order is automatically sent to the email address you provide when you place your order with us.  We will include a copy of your order with the item we are shipping.  Your receipt will indicate the stones you selected, the karat gold quality, the stone placement and ring size.

What does your packaging look like?

All Mother's Rings® are packaged in a beautiful white heart box.  Click here to view our packaging.

Can I see what my ring will actually look like before I purchase?

We currently do not have a program that will allow our customers to view the ring they are interested in with the stones they have selected.  If you were to visit a jewelry store to view the selection of mother's rings, you would most often only be shown only one ring sample in that style.  The mfr. only provides us with one sample ring which we photograph to put online and a stone placement chart.  We are checking into the time and work involved in offering this placement option online. Please note that even if we do eventually offer this service, it would only be an approximate color guide since actual colors of stones would very greatly because of customer's computer monitor settings, the difference in stones themselves, scanning equipment, etc.
